Making An Older Child Feel Special After Bringing Home A New Baby

Not only did we bring home a newborn, but we brought home a baby that require more attention and fussing over than the normal baby.  My husband and I were exhausted and barely keeping it together. I went back to work just four weeks after him coming home and we were just trying to keep our heads above water.

One day my seven-year-old son broke down over something really silly.  We sat down and had a talk and I realized how much we had been neglecting him emotionally. The two of us had a long discussion about what he needed from us and we came up with a game plan to all make a point of spending more time together.

Thus began family game night and family movie night. We even put it on our calendar so we would do what we could not to miss it.  During the week I try to watch out for a good family movie to record for our Wednesday night movie.  Sometimes he would even find a movie to record himself. On my way home from work I’d pick up a special snack, our favorite being supplies for root beer floats and we’d sit down and cuddle up to a movie.

Every Sunday evening was dubbed as family game night.  We spend an hour playing  a game of his choice. Our favorites have been Uno, Gestures, and Yahtzee.  He also loves Monopoly but that is a hard game to play in an hour and someone always ends up mad, so we try to avoid it.  We all get very passionate about Monopoly!

My son also brought home a flier for boy scouts and him and my husband have made it their thing. They’ve gone on two camping trips, and had a fishing derby, even winning a few trophies.  It has been a great confidence booster and a great time for bonding.

It was a bit rough scheduling everything in especially with us both working full time and Baby E’s medical issues but it turned out to be great additions to our week that we all enjoy and has made a huge difference in our seven-year old’s attitude and adjustment to the new baby.
